Hyderabad, July 29th 2026: Every year, World IVF Day celebrates one of modern medicine’s greatest achievements, helping millions of individuals and couples realise their dream of parenthood through Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). However, the day also presents an opportunity to shift the national conversation beyond IVF and towards something far more fundamental like fertility health awareness.
Today, infertility is increasingly affecting younger populations, yet fertility continues to remain one of the least discussed aspects of preventive healthcare. While people are encouraged to monitor their heart health, blood sugar levels and blood pressure from an early age, very few are educated about preserving their reproductive health or understanding the factors that influence fertility.
One of the biggest challenges is the lack of awareness. Many individuals remain unaware that fertility naturally declines with age, particularly in women, or that conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, thyroid disorders, obesity, diabetes, sexually transmitted infections and certain lifestyle choices can significantly affect the ability to conceive. Couples often seek medical help only after years of unsuccessful attempts, by which time treatment may become more complex, emotionally demanding and financially burdensome.
The message this World IVF Day should therefore be clear that fertility care should begin long before fertility treatment becomes necessary.
Just as individuals with a family history of diabetes or cardiovascular disease are encouraged to adopt preventive lifestyles and undergo regular health screenings, reproductive health too deserves a preventive approach. Those planning to delay parenthood, individuals with irregular menstrual cycles, known medical conditions or previous reproductive health issues should consider timely fertility counselling and assessment. Early awareness enables informed life choices, timely interventions and, where appropriate, fertility preservation.
Equally important is breaking the stigma surrounding infertility. Infertility is a medical condition, not a personal failure. Yet many individuals and couples continue to suffer in silence because of social pressures, misconceptions and fear of judgement. Encouraging open conversations and promoting scientifically accurate information can help normalise discussions around fertility and ensure that more people seek help without hesitation.
Accessibility must also become part of the national conversation. Quality fertility care should not be available only to those who can afford it. There is a growing need to explore broader insurance coverage for fertility treatments and encourage employers to introduce fertility-related health benefits as part of comprehensive employee wellness programmes. Such measures can significantly reduce the emotional and financial burden faced by couples while promoting equitable access to reproductive healthcare.
Healthcare providers, policymakers, employers, educators and the media all have an important role in building greater public awareness about fertility health. The focus should be on education, early evaluation, prevention and timely access to evidence-based care rather than waiting until infertility becomes a crisis.
This World IVF Day, let us redefine the conversation. The progress will be measured by creating a society where fertility awareness becomes part of routine healthcare, stigma is replaced with understanding, preventive reproductive health is prioritised and every individual has access to accurate information and quality fertility care.
